Great comments everyone! I would agree with what others have said about the part where client’s can state whether they want to talk about a given topic. I think if a client chose not to talk about a certain topic it would offer you as the clinician insight that some of those “problems” the client’s don’t want to talk about may actually be quite distressing for them, hence their choice to not discuss them. I like the comment made about noting the areas where client’s elect not to talk about and making it a long-term goal to process those areas with the client when they are therapeutically ready to do so. I think that is a very effective approach regarding any follow up on questions and information that was not discussed initially, due to the client’s discomfort with those topics!
