I would echo what others have said about brain deterioration/damage as a result of the Duration of Untreated Psychosis. Our psychiatrists have made comments about this on various occasions when discussing clients. For those client’s who are unwilling to engage in treatment (e.g., medications) it will be challenging to get them to buy into this risk. I think sometimes client’s can be so preoccupied or focused on other things related to their psychosis, it may be difficult for them to prioritize this knowledge and take action to manage this. I think part of this has to do with acceptance of the diagnosis. Client’s often disagree with their diagnoses and therefore would not agree they have psychosis and so may essentially disregard any conversations related to this topic.
