My approach with families and clients is to begin with relationship and working to understand how health, mental health, psychosis, and medications are viewed or conceptualized within their family and cultural system. I find these to be important early steps to understanding the values and decision making of the client and family system. My professional background (OT) allows me to empower clients and families to continue with the valued health practices of their family system while also gradually offering psychoeducation about medical management of psychosis. I think we must be mindful not to offer education too quickly. Far more important is to actively work to understand the perspective of those we support and the values driving their perspective. Looking forward to checking back in to see how this discussion unfolds.
