In my experience as a nurse a lot of the times clients are hesitant to start medications for various reasons such as drug interactions and potential side effects. Clients suffering from mental illnesses are also prone to medication non-adherence due to lack of insight about their mental health and treatment. There are also clients who may be on medication for short time or for ongoing stabilization of symptoms. Sudden stopping of medication can also be dangerous and can cause serious side effects. Education around the the importance of medication and how it will help is crucial. There are also concerns of stigma in mental health therefore creates a barrier to seeking treatment. Education around the the importance of medication and how it will help is crucial. Building rapport and a trusting relationship with the patient can also improve medication adherence. A good therapeutic relationship in mental health with the interdisciplinary team and the client themselves will be useful. It is important to speak to the client and discuss what is meaningful to them and understand their concerns and bringing awareness will help in medication compliance.
