Thank you Palwinder for opening this discussion thread. Though I have not had a great deal of experience in dealing directly with families from an EPI perspective, I believe that having or helping to restore function and support within the family is paramount to success for the client in terms of recovery. I have concern for those family members who become “overly” involved, which may lead to a sense of lack of autonomy for the client, and also care giver burnout for the family member. Having a loved one that is unwell can be scary for those who love them and this fear may drive an overinvolvement to the point that the client feels smothered or control which may cause more harm. I am wondering about ways to best support family member to be engaged yet remember that they need to care for themselves as well.
