Reply To: Family Involvement

I feel that family participation is vital to a client’s care/treatment planning. Key benefits to this include ongoing discussions with the family; sharing necessary collateral and giving the Clinician an opportunity to provide the family the resources, tools and support around the client as well. Two main challenges I have come across are confidentiality and families that can sometimes hinder a client’s path to treatment. When I say hinder, I mean families who do not feel that their loved one requires medications and ongoing treatments, and who do not wish to engage with the Clinician for further information and education. My experience has been to continue inviting families to education sessions or meeting 1:1 with the client alone and then as a group with the family. Approaching families from a place of compassion and empathy goes a long way.
