Many of my young clients have struggled with taking their medication. I instantly think of a 13 year old with auditory hallucinations whose mother also suffered from schizophrenia and it was actually her untreated paranoia that needed to be addressed, as she thought her son’s medication was poisoned. Once her symptoms were treated and her medications were adjusted then our client was able to have the necessary support needed to take his medications. Often finding the correct anti-psychotic and supported required for clients are like puzzle pieces and trying to fit them together is one of the joys of providing EPI services to youth and families, I always try and remember that the puzzle regardless of how difficult it is in the moment for the client and support team will come together in the end.
