I’ve had many clients stop their medications for various reasons. I try to find out what they are – is it concern with side effects? Is it due to the belief they aren’t needed? Is it because they are disorganized and have trouble remembering to take it? I will try to gather this information from the client and from family. I will try to answer their concerns and provide medication education if they are open to it. If there are side effects occurring then I will ensure this is brought up at their appointments with the psychiatrist or if more urgent, then have them addressed asap. And sometimes despite all best efforts, I accept that sometimes clients stop their medications as part of their journey and that a relapse will occur. And afterwards they may be more adherent to medications in the future. All the while I will be supportive, client-centred and non-judgemental.
