Hi Kevin, Rachael – hope you don’t mind me jumping in here. I also have seen marijuana used as a harm reduction factor for chronic alcohol use. I worked with an incarcerated fellow who continually goes to jail when under the influence of alcohol because it affects him in a way that elicits aggression and violence. He doesn’t drink anymore, but will use marijuana to regulate when he finds the urge to drink. Marijuana as harm reduction definitely does not work with everyone. We all process substances so differently, everything from wheat to sugar to crystal meth. I’ve also worked with people who I’ve witnessed enter a state of active psychosis after smoking a joint. I see it as a process of inquiry and self-evaluation into what helps us harm ourselves less.
