The perception of cannabis as a harm reduction option for “harder” drugs varies. While some view cannabis as a less harmful alternative, opinions differ. In substance use counseling, professionals may consider harm reduction strategies for clients using multiple substances, including cannabis. However, if a client is using methamphetamine but not cannabis, a harm reduction conversation would focus on reducing harm related to methamphetamine use, exploring safer techniques, managing use, and accessing support services. The goal is to minimize harms regardless of the substances involved, adapting strategies to each client’s unique situation.
